Recycling is used for a container or centre that accepts waste for recycling, and donations of used goods.

This tag is for sites where waste of specific types is accepted to be reused or recycled - if the site is for disposing of arbitrary waste, consider a different tag as listed under Waste Processing.

How to map

Draw a node or an area and add amenity=recycling + recycling_type=*.

Recycling type

Tags used in combination

  • operator=* - responsible organization
  • opening_hours=* - opening hours of the centre or usage period of a container
  • capacity=* - the total capacity of a container in m³

Accepted types of waste

  • Most recycling sites only accept specific types of waste. recycling:*=* is therefore used to list all materials you're allowed to recycle or donate. Please expand this list.
  • Use material=* to describe the material of the container itself.
  • Adding one or more types of waste with yes implies that all other types are considered not accepted.
  • Adding a more general type or category of waste (e.g. recycling:scrap_metal=yes) implies that more specific types of waste within that category (e.g. recycling:aluminium) are also accepted.
Tag Description Count
recycling:aerosol_cans Home and DIY (etc.) aerosol cans (e.g., hairspray, spray paint, etc.) All
recycling:aluminium All
recycling:aluminium_cans All
recycling:animal_waste All
recycling:asbestos All
recycling:bags All kinds of bags. All
recycling:batteries Household batteries (e.g. D-cell, 9-volt). Does not imply larger batteries are accepted, see recycling:car_batteries. All
recycling:belts All belts related to clothing. All
recycling:beverage_cartons Carton package (multi-materials, e.g. Tetra Pak) for drink and food – possible duplicate of more frequently used recycling:cartons. All
recycling:bicycles All
recycling:boats All
recycling:books Donation of books All
recycling:bottles Ambiguous – should be re-surveyed and likely replaced with recycling:glass_bottles and/or recycling:plastic_bottles. All
recycling:cans Many places are tagged as accepting cans without recycling:metal in general[1] All
recycling:car_batteries Some facilities will take household batteries (recycling:batteries) but not car batteries All
recycling:cardboard In about 90% cases of recycling:cardboard=yes it duplicates recycling:paper=yes[2] All
recycling:cartons Paper based cartons (for drink or food). Likely to be data of low value due to mixing paper cartons, multi-material cartons like Tetra Pak by various mappers. All
recycling:cds Compact discs and DVDs All
recycling:chipboard All
recycling:christmas_trees Place where old Christmas trees are collected, use with opening_hours=Jan 01-Jan 15 or so. All
recycling:clothes=* Donation of clothes, including shoes (e.g. Humana and others)
recycling:coffee_capsules Shows if recycling facilities take coffee capsules All
recycling:compost waste=organic All
recycling:computers=*
recycling:cooking_oil All
recycling:cork All
recycling:diapers All
recycling:drugs Expired drugs. Container available generally in pharmacies. All
recycling:electrical_appliances All
recycling:electrical_items Larger electrical items like fridges, freezers, dishwashers, etc. (See also recycling:white_goods, which tends to mean fridges, freezers, washing machines, dishwashers, ovens in British English; we'd probably choose recycling:electrical_items or recycling:small_appliances for appliances like TVs, vacuum cleaners, microwaves and anything smaller). All
recycling:electronics All
recycling:engine_oil All
recycling:fire_extinguishers=* recharging (refueling) of fire extinguishers
recycling:fluorescent_tubes All
recycling:foil Kitchen foil/tin foil All
recycling:food A community fridge to help reduce food waste. See also the proposed tag amenity=food_sharing. All
recycling:food_waste Cooked and uncooked food, such fruit and vegetables including peelings, rice and bread, meat and fish, dairy, tea bags and coffee grounds. In places where all organic (biodegradable) waste is collected together, this is effectively a rare synonym for recycling:green_waste=*, but in places where garden waste and food waste are collected separately, this tag is more precise. All
recycling:furniture Pieces of furniture or furnishings All
recycling:garden_waste Garden waste such as flowers, plants, grass clippings, leaves, twigs and small branches. In areas where all organic (biodegradable) waste is collected together, this is effectively a rarer duplicate of recycling:green_waste=*. Differences, if any, will vary across mappers and location. If garden waste and food waste are collected separately, this tag is more precise. All
recycling:gas_bottles Pressurized gas bottles such as those for camping propane and butane. These are often prohibited elsewhere (See Coleman's Green Key program). All
recycling:glass Implies recycling:glass_bottles=yes, but there's no standard yet for indicating which of the trickier types (drinking glasses, window glass, light bulb glass, tempered glass, borosilicate glass, Pyrex) are accepted. Note that recycling containers labelled glass often are supposed to be used for solely soda–lime glass, what excludes nearly all "tricky" glass and should be tagged with recycling:glass_bottles rather than this. It is often quite hidden in recommendations or regulations that actually just bottles and jars are allowed[3]. For example borosilicate glass (sold under brand names such as Pyrex, Borosil, Duran) or other glasses are excluded, in effect excluding glassware, lighting bulbs, window glass, mirrors, spectacles, reagent bottles and more. All
recycling:glass_bottles Includes jars but not any of the trickier types listed under recycling:glass. All
recycling:glass_bottles:colour Semi-colon separated values of the colour(s) accepted. Suggested values include: "mixed", "clear", "green" (often also includes blue) and "brown". Note the use of "white" is likely a mistranslation and should only be used for truly white opaque glass. All
recycling:glass_jars Probably effectively a duplicate of recycling:glass_bottles. All
recycling:green_waste=* Compost - leftover food, vegetables, fruit, usually except meat. In practice it also includes recycling:garden_waste. Differences, if any, will vary across mappers and location.
recycling:hardcore Possible duplicate of more frequently used recycling:rubble. All
recycling:hazardous_waste Common house hold hazardous waste (paints, chemicals, asbestos). All
recycling:hydrargyrum All
recycling:leaves wire baskets in parks and residential areas, only for the collection of leaves All
recycling:light_bulbs All
recycling:low_energy_bulbs All
recycling:magazines Over 90% of uses repeats recycling:paper=yes, but some places are tagged as allowing newspapers without allowing paper.[4] All
recycling:marine_waste All
recycling:metal All sorts of metal – possible duplicate of more frequently used recycling:scrap_metal; see below. All
recycling:metal_packaging All
recycling:mobile_phones=*
recycling:newspaper Over 90% of uses repeats recycling:paper=yes, but some places are tagged as allowing newspapers without allowing paper[5] All
recycling:oil All
recycling:operator A mistaken tag that isn't actually a recyclable material – should be replaced with plain operator=*. All
recycling:organic Organic remains of food that are recycled into biogas or compost. Assuming that this tag definition was intended this tag is likely to change meaning, as nothing in its value excludes organic non-food trash. All
recycling:organic_waste See the more used recycling:organic=*. All
recycling:others All
recycling:packaging All
recycling:paint All
recycling:pallets Wooden shipping pallets All
recycling:paper In some cases more specific tags may be needed if only specific form of paper needs to be recycled. See recycling:paper_packaging, recycling:cardboard, recycling:magazines and recycling:newspapers for more specific alternatives. All
recycling:paper_packaging Over 90% of uses repeats recycling:paper=yes, but some places are tagged as allowing paper packagings without allowing paper[6] All
recycling:pens Writing instruments, usually plastic pens All
recycling:PET=* All kind of material made of polyethylene terephthalate (abbr. PET or PETE, [W] recycling code 1). Please use recycling:pet_drink_bottles if only PET drink bottles are allowed.
recycling:pet_drink_bottles=* PET beverage bottles only
recycling:plasterboard This usually includes all loose plaster, based on Gypsum All
recycling:plastic=* In the UK at least, often centres/containers will distinguish between (broadly) hard plastics (typically ones that shatter), soft plastics (typically bendy food packaging; black food plastic may be an exception), carrier bags, and all other stretchy plastics. Many will accept only a subset of these, so try to pick more specific categories if you can.
recycling:plastic_bags All
recycling:plastic_bottle_caps=* recycling:plastic_bottle_tops=* has the same meaning, but plastic_bottle_caps is more popular
recycling:plastic_bottle_tops=* See more at recycling:plastic_bottle_tops=* - note that plastic_bottle_caps is more popular
recycling:plastic_bottles=* Often they allow bottles but not other plastic items! There is significant number (over 6k as of September 2019) places tagged as accepting plastic bottles, without accepting broader plastics[7]. There is also over 5k of location where recycling:plastic_bottles=yes duplicates recycling:plastic=yes, as of September 2019[8]
recycling:plastic_caps Bottle tops made out of plastic, note that tag name does not include "bottle" part - and such places do not accept caps from say engine oil containers. Duplicate of recycling:plastic_bottle_tops=* All
recycling:plastic_packaging Other packaging made out of plastic. There are a significant number (over 4,000 as of September 2019) of places tagged as accepting plastic packaging, without accepting broader plastics[9]. There are also over 4,000 locations where recycling:plastic_packaging=yes duplicates recycling:plastic=yes, as of September 2019[10] All
recycling:pmd=* Plastic packaging, metal packaging, drink cartons; combined household packaging, glass and paper excluded. Common way of collecting in The Netherlands and Belgium.
recycling:polyester All
recycling:polystyrene_foam Polystyrene foam. Can be styrofoam, generic extruded polystyrene foam, or generic expanded polystyrene foam. All
recycling:printer_cartridges See recycling:printer_inkjet_cartridges or recycling:printer_toner_cartridges for more specific restrictions, since not all centres accept both ink and toner (e.g. Ross on Wye[11]). All
recycling:printer_inkjet_cartridges All
recycling:printer_toner_cartridges All
recycling:refund_bottles All
recycling:refund_bottle_crates All
recycling:rubble Bricks and building rubble; see also recycling:hardcore. All
recycling:scrap_metal All
recycling:second_hand All
recycling:sheet_metal All
recycling:shoes=*
recycling:small_appliances All
recycling:small_electrical_appliances Small electrical items such as computer mice, keyboards, electric razors, pocket radios, hair dryers, irons, electric kettles, small quantities of electric cables, etc. All
recycling:small_metal Small metal parts such as screws, chains, nails, cutlery All
recycling:styrofoam Typically refers to expanded styrofoam, such as styrofoam box or packing material All
recycling:tetrapak All
recycling:textiles All
recycling:toys All
recycling:tv_monitor All
recycling:tyres All
recycling:verre Likely a duplicate of recycling:glass or a similar tag (verre is French for glass). Note that tags should be in (British) English. All
recycling:waste General waste container (black bags) (don't use this if the waste is not recycled, use a tag like amenity=waste_disposal or amenity=waste_basket instead) All
recycling:waste_oil waste=oil All
recycling:white_goods In British English this only means fridges, freezers, washing machines, dishwashers, ovens; see also recycling:electrical_items and recycling:small_appliances, which might be better suited for appliances like TVs, vacuum cleaners, microwaves and anything smaller) All
recycling:wood All
