smoking=* is used to describe whether [W] smoking is allowed or not in a facility or on a property. Primarily, this tag is used on hospitality related amenities such as amenity=restaurant, amenity=pub, or tourism=hotel, but it is also applicable with amenity=hospital or educational amenities. In these latter cases smoking indoors was often already prohibited or severely limited by law, but smoking outside on the grounds of these amenities is increasingly banned as well.

Values

Tag smoking=* is used with the following values:

Key Value Description
smoking dedicated The complete facility (restaurant, pub, etc.) is dedicated to smokers; E.g., as a smoker's club, Fumoir, or Raucherclub.
smoking yes Smoking is permitted in the entire amenity or property.
smoking separated Smoking is permitted in a separated room or area, either two different areas of the same room, or in different rooms without having an effective separation to each other; e.g., there is a door which is not being closed immediately after a person has passed.
smoking isolated Smoking is prohibited and allowed in two different rooms which are separated effectively (e.g., walls and a door which is opened only as long as it is necessary to pass through)
smoking no Smoking is prohibited in the entire amenity or property, without exceptions. Use separated or isolated if there are exceptions. Tag separated;isolated is also meaningful.
smoking outside Smoking is allowed on the property but only in outside areas.

Key variants

If the tag smoking=outside is not specific enough, you can use smoking:outside=*:

Key Value Description
smoking:outside yes Smoking is permitted in all open-air parts of the amenity
smoking:outside separated Smoking is permitted in a separated area of the open-air parts of the amenity
smoking:outside no Smoking is prohibited in the open-air parts of the amenity

Examples

A specific designated smoking area can be marked with:

Key Value Description
smoking dedicated Indicates smoking is permitted.
area yes To indicate you are defining the smoking zone.
