To map or not

Mapping this, fire hydrants, transformers, or street light poles isn't suggested unless people managing them use, or are successfully persuaded to use, OpenStreetMap data. -- LukeyBear (unsigned)

Can you explain this statement? It doesn’t seem this is an opinion that is shared by many mappers, because it would mean stopping to map. —-Dieterdreist (talk) 07:46, 16 July 2023 (UTC)
I agree with Dieterdreist, as you can see by the taginfo embed on the page, there are over 280,000 uses of this tag. The usage of OSM data is not only for the "people managing" the respective IRL objects, it is well used by anyone that wishes to use it, just like any other OSM data. Could you give more reasoning as to what detriment mapping these objects have? -- CarrotManMatt (talk) 14:36, 16 July 2023 (UTC+1)
I often map such features as it provides helpful landmarks for other mappers, especially those without easy access proper aerial imagery (mobile editors for instance). In these cases being able to say "oh, this feature goes between the manhole and the street lamp" --Upstream Snack (talk) 06:19, 31 May 2024 (UTC)

Important

Such features are important, even just as w:Control point (orienteering). Anyway, with them, one can point to where on the map an incident happened, as the manhole might be the only nearby feature in a long stretch of highway. Or "turn left into the woods, just after that manhole." Jidanni (talk) 14:10, 21 August 2023 (UTC)

Pollution source hunting

News often has e.g.,

About that Neon Green in the Creek, it was indeed a dye test done by DC Water “The dye will dissipate and is harmless.”

One could locate nearby manholes which might be the source... Jidanni (talk) 14:15, 21 August 2023 (UTC)

Size

Hole with a cover that allows access to an underground service location, just large enough for a human to climb through.

OK, but do mention how to map slightly smaller and larger covers. Jidanni (talk) 14:06, 4 October 2023 (UTC)

Rendering

Mention if or if not rendered. Jidanni (talk) 14:40, 4 October 2023 (UTC)
